We have updated the National Rural Network –> References page to include a link to the European Commission publication entitled “The Common Agricultural Policy explained”. We have also added links to a series of European Commission Factsheets in relation to Agriculture & Rural Development.
For those new to CAP “The Common Agricultural Policy explained” publication presents a very nice history of the policy and the reforms it went through.
The CAP has its roots in 1950s western Europe, whose societies had been damaged by years of war, and where agriculture had been crippled and food supplies could not be guaranteed. The emphasis of the early CAP was on encouraging better agricultural
productivity so that consumers had a stable supply of afordable food and ensure that the EU had a viable agricultural sector.
The publication also presents some interesting diagrams such as the following, entitled “Share (%) in EU Agriculture (2005)”. (Click on image to enlarge)
The publication and various factsheets can be found in the National Rural Network –> References page.
